Hanshi

Hanshi Shihan Scott Evans, founder of Koyama Dojo, has dedicated nearly 30 years to studying and teaching Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu (HDRJJ) under the guidance of Soke Michael LaMonica. He began training in 1995 after taking a self-defense class at the University of Akron and founded Koyama Dojo in Michigan in 2004. In 2017, Scott achieved the rank of San Dai Kichu, one of the highest levels in HDRJJ. Recognized for his expertise, he was appointed HDRJJ Technical Director of North America in 2022 and promoted to Hanshi in 2023, with Koyama Dojo named the Honbu Dojo for North America.

Scott has also trained in Iaido under Nickolaus Suino Sensei, achieving the rank of Nikyu, and in Pekiti Tirsia Kali under Mataas na Guro Justin Schaffner. Outside the dojo, he is a devoted husband, father of three, and a business development executive in the biotech industry.

JASON SPIRKO

Menkyo Kaiden Shihan

Jason Spirko is a senior instructor at Koyama Dojo in Livonia, MI, where he shares over 16 years of martial arts expertise, holding the Menkyo Kaiden Shihan rank in Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu. Training since 2008 under Hanshi Scott Evans, Jason received his Shihan rank from Soke Michael J. LaMonica in 2022 and Menkyo Kaiden from Nidai Soke Antonio Garcia in 2024.

He continues to expand his skills in Pekiti Tirsia Kali with Mataas na Guro Justin Schaffner and has experience in Gracie Combatives, Gracie Bullyproof for Kids, and Silat, enriching his teaching with a diverse self-defense background.
